Training Log: 1/28/10

Note: This is the first of many posts that will journal my progress over the next 90 days as I train with a local USPSA Grandmaster, Tim Tucker, to become at least an “A” class USPSA shooter.

Last week I had my first live fire training session with Tim Tucker, a local Grandmaster in USPSA.

Mostly we worked on my draws, then moved on to target transitions. Tim showed me a faster way to draw the gun, sweeping straight up and closing your fingers around the grip,”snatching” the gun from the holster. This is a faster but riskier technique than the method I have always used, bringing the hand over the gun, pushing down on the gun to get a good grip, and then pulling the gun from the holster. The “snatching” technique is riskier because if done improperly can result in a poor grip, or worse, throwing the gun out of the holster and onto the ground. The latter issue is more common with the CR-speed “race” holster that I currently use. The technique Tim taught me for transitions between two pieces of steel arranged vertically was to follow the sight up in recoil, and “notch” the gun up to the steel.

Overall I learned some very important stuff that I will strongly reinforce with dryfire and Airsoft practice.
