Review: CMMG AR-22 Conversion Kit

Note: This review was actually written in Fall of 2009. My dad decided to post it when he set me up with this website.

It’s no secret that ammunition prices have gone through the roof and into the stratosphere, especially .223.

So, at a gun show in Salt Lake city last week, my Dad and I bought a CMMG .22 long rifle conversion kit for our DPMS AP4 and 24′ bull barrel AR-15 rifles. The kit allows any AR-15 style rifle to shoot the smaller and cheaper .22lr bullet, while still using the existing scope, trigger, and furniture  (hand guard and butt stock).

To install, just push a pin on the lower receiver to open it, pull out your current bolt, drop in the .22 bolt, and close

the receiver.

The kit has endless uses, from “tactical” rabbit and prairie dog hunting to USPSA three gun practice. Ours ran perfectly and shot exactly where we aimed it. The CMMG conversion kit has a retail price of $190.00 with one 26 round magazine or $230.00 with three magazines. We got ours at a gun show for $190.00 with three magazines.

Good review. Is this kit generic for AR-15′s? I have a Colt version and think it would be a good idea, especially since the range I use allows .22 rifle.
Any thoughts on 1911 .22 conversion kits?

  2. Brian says:

Yes, the kit will fit any AR-15 style rifle, including Colt. I used a Kimber 1911 conversion kit on a Kimber desert warrior to shoot Steel Challenge this weekend and it jammed almost every other shot. .22 pistols are finicky, and conversion kits are inconsistent. I shot Federal value pack ammo, CCI blazer, and Remington hollow points, and the Remington was the most reliable. The most malfunctions we had were misfires, but a lot of times the hammer spring in the .45 was too heavy for the light recoil of the .22 to actually make the slide go back, resulting in the gun firing, but the recoil only bringing the hammer to half-cock. If you want to shoot a .22 pistol similar to a 1911, try the Ruger 22/45. It is about the same price as a conversion kit, and has the same grip contour as a 1911. Or you could pay about $500 for a Marvel or Tactical Solutions conversion kit that most serious competition shooters use. I have never tried one, but if that many people use them, they MUST work.

I think you are on the right track as far as buying an actual .22 pistol over a conversion kit. Luckily, I have a Browning Buckmark already, which works just fine. I may try the AR conversion, however.

  4. If I get the product and I do not like it how shortly do i return it?

  5. Brian says:

I am not sure of the warranty on the product, check the CMMG website, http://www.cmmginc.com. For some troubleshooting tips, check this page on AR-15.com.
If the kit absolutely refuses to work, contact CMMG and they will repair it for you, and they will pay for shipping.

I sent my A4 in for warranty service and I must say those CMMG folks were great! They even gave me a call to let me know what they found and what they did to correct it. Just a great experience.
