Hi Dave,

If you like the DA/SA trigger, the GP5 is a great gun.

They not only changed the frame material, but also the design. It now has interchangeable backstraps in different sizes, as well as one that mirrors the 1911 grip angle.

Any updates lately? I am strongly considering a GP5 (Compact). I see they changed the composite from a GF20 to GF30 (GF=GlassFilled) Polymer for more strength. I see one poster mentioned the loose mag issue. I too have had great experience with STI on a 1911 and that is a big reason I am even considering a GP5. I just wish there was more info out there about these.

only for correction: GP K100 has not been adopted by Slovak army. They still use CZ 82, CZ 75 and some Glock.

I took possession of my GP6 approx. a week and a half ago. Then turned around and had it returned for two specific reasons. The most bothersome being with a full mag and a snap cap in the barrell the magazines banged from side to side. When I held the mag to one side there was as much as a eigth of an inch of play. This did not effect function but is just plain annoying. I really like the pistol and as stated above the safties are not easily engaged. I then wrote and asked them to take the edges of the trigger which was my fault because I meant the top of the hammer. The pistol is slick but it's great ergonomics help that out. I received a reply today from Dave that he took care of the very tight mag release but that there was nothing he could do about the loose mags. He also polished the trigger ( entirely my fault ). I also need to add that Customer Service was excellent as far as returning the pistol. I only had to package it up. Then when their UPS return sticker arrived I merely pasted it on the package and UPS sent it on it's way at absolutely 0 cost to me. I will never understand the poor fitting mags or the inability to fix it. All in all STI is a classy company and I would not hesitate to do business with them.

Raul, I heard that STI is considering a more 1911-ish thumb safety, but no promises.

As to the malfunctions, mine did that too after about 300 rounds. Have you cleaned it? STI test fires every gun they sell and ship 'em dirty.

James, you're right. The cocking serrations on the slide are also more aggresive than the vanilla GP-6

Good Review! The trigger is great and it works like a 1911's. The Vector, made in South Africa, works the same. The trigger reset is as short as the GP-6.
The thumb safety is actually thin and slippery and you cannot thumb it down easy. It's almost inutile. Will STI change this thumb safety?
My gp-6 did not perform as yours. It was not race ready. Fired 10 rounds and 6 of them, I had to push the slide to "home" the round.

You keep mentioning the -C, but aside from the adjustable rear sights, mag release button size, and fiber optic front sight, all that you described are descriptive of the vanilla GP6 as well, right? Because the price difference about $200 or so.

I was going to comment that the Beretta (and now Stoeger) Cougar and the Beretta PX-4 have rotating barrels, so the GP6-C isn't unique in having a rotating barrel.

After watching the video, however, I will say that the Cougar and PX-4 both use a locking block to manage the rotating barrel and it looks like the cam for the groove in the barrel on the GP6-C is integral to the frame.

So they are a bit different.

Excellent review, thank you.

Very interesting review. Thanks for the info. Were you able to provide your review to STI for feedback? I'd like to see a DA/SA pistol with a decocker. Seems not having it is a bit of a safety hazard otherwise.

I'd also like some more info regarding your statements against the 226. I'm a Sig guy. Can you clarify the malf's you experienced with the Sigs, number of rounds, rounds since cleaning, lifetime on the springs etc? If you don't mind, I'm honestly interested.

BTW the issues you had with the Sig trigger can be fixed with the SRT trigger. Of course it sounds like GP6 fixes that right out of the box.

Happy shooting, stay safe!
