Air Rifle Upgrades

From time to time I like to hunt some pesky rabbits along the banks of the Virgin River where it runs through St. George. Unfortunately, that’s within city limits and there are a few houses nearby that the loud noise of a firearm might bother. So I use an air rifle, the Crosman Quest. It fires a .177 caliber lead pellet at a speed of 1000 feet per second (plenty for rabbits) using a very powerful spring. It has a rail for mounting a scope, but the spring under the receiver is causes the scope to vibrate so much that it won’t hold a zero. I really prefer a red dot sight for rabbit hunting, so I decided to build my own mount.

Basically I cut four pieces of wood, screwed them together and then shimmed them onto the stock, not the receiver. I then screwed a strip of Mil-std 1913 rail(stolen from an Airsoft rifle) onto the top piece and mounted a Hammers red dot sight. The mount holds it’s zero really well because it doesn’t touch the receiver, and has the very thick wood stock to dampen the vibration of the gun. It shoots exactly where I aim it.

I also plan to mount a laser sight and flashlight to the sides of the mount, for rabbit hunting at night (when they least expect it).

I wonder what humidity shrinking/expanding the wood will do to the zero.
